Nocturnal Sunshine, Maya Jane Coles

maya jane coles
Maya Jane Coles of She Is Danger has revealed a secret called Nocturnal Sunshine, an experimental side project dabbling in her signature tech house / dub and electronica combo.
I'm liking the deep, chilled and minimal groove.
Really fresh and tight.
Sometimes its nice to move away from typical "bangers"and appreciate tracks with more substance such as these.

These ones are exclusives, so count yourselves lucky.

A Weather

a weather

A Weather is a quiet indie-folk band from Portland. Their album, Everyday Balloons was just released a few days ago on Conor Oberst's Team Love Records and its really lovely.
Such a gorgeous band, perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll with your lover, holding hands watching the trees prepare for spring.
Kinda like a pretty Damien Rice album without the grating self-victimisation.
Definitely for fans of Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, Wilco, etc.

Meat Katie

meat katie
Londoner, Meat Katie's label Lot 49 is known for pushing the tech-funk sound: a mash-up of electro, hints of house, bits of breakbeat with a firmhold on techno.
He's got a new ep out entitled, The Tension taking that tech-funk sound to a whole new level with a diverse select of remixers (including Mateo Murphy, Flavio Diaz) working it into an electro-funk, tech-house frenzy.
One thing stays constant, and thats the heavy bass lines that wobble and roll through out.

FOALS: Spanish Sahara

New video revealed from Foals' new album, Total Life Forever which is scheduled for release on May 10th, 2010.
Talk about total change of direction. Yannis and co has made a drastic u-turn away from their previous highly-energetic, stop-start indierock from their first release
Antidotes, a sound he once described as "making insect noises with guitars."
This time Foals are more laid back and chilled out, kinda melancholy too. The video is absolutely beautiful.

Also, if you go to their website, you can get a lush remix of Spanish Sahara.

Tried looking for pre-order info on Transgressive and Sub Pop but couldn't find any. Oh well, we'll just have to wait.

FUKKK OFFF

ukkk offf remix is king
Ok, lets just say this. The first time FUKKK OFFF came into our radar was like about a few months back ago? Heard the track Love Me Hate Me Kiss Me Kill Me and wasn't too impressed. Maybe its because there's too many stuff going on at the time, maybe we were distracted by summat else, maybe we just didnt take the time to appreciate Bastian Heerhorst's dj alter-ego.

But then there was that remix of Popular Damage that got stuck on repeat for fucking weeks on the player. And then Remix Is King dropped, and well, lets just say we started paying attention again and he's now he's practically a god in Germany. This guy switches from proper bangin electro house to hard house to nu disco like its nothin.

Remix Is King is a massive 10 track compilation with remixes of his tracks from big players like Markus Lange, Zodiac Cartel, unreleased mixes from peeps like Dirty Disco Youth etc and Fukkk Offf's own remixes of Zombie Nation, 2008's blog sensation Midfield General etc -
I don't want to reveal too much. Just buy it from Beatport here now.

CocoMachete's been kind enough to give away 4 of the tracks off the compilation to yall. Say whatt..?

Chris Liven (Biancardi Remix)

chris liven (biancardi remix)
If there is one thing I admire about Biancardi, its his persistence, determination and hard work. This guy is constantly churning out new stuff and while some of his stuff may not be easy to get into, this new techno remix that he has emailed the blog a few weeks back is by far one of his best ones.
It's definitely got an infectious sound.
Kinda progressive but kinda minimal. Must listen.

Them:Youth

themyouth
Them:Youth has been under our radar for awhile now since Halo came out last year on Dirty Boots. Still cant believe they're not signed to a major yet.
The word "up-and-coming" cannot be more urgent than this.

This London 4 piece is definitely going for big anthemic tunes, Lost And Lonely definitely nailed that. The track In Your Way starts out Joy Division-y before launching into a fast drumbeat and a New Order-like bassline.
Them:Youth are unlike any of the contemporary britrock bands coming out these days. Their songs have a melancholic edge, fused with an electronic beat, and it is that synthetic sound that somehow makes their songs sound more whole.

[Them:Youth - In Your Way] Absolutely LOVE this!

[Them:Youth - Lost And Lonely] Stunning Track!

We've been tipped that the currently being recorded studio album is a big one and will be released on their own label, Big Hand Recordings sometime in June.

Gangcharger

gangcharger
Today's posts are going to be a bit rock. But hold up a sec. I need to say this: last night I went to that one off Return To Sub Pop night at the Cockpit and was sorely disappointed by the DJs' playlist. Expecting nostalgia and grunge, all I could hear was the most obscure stuff ever. Fair enough Nirvana is not the only grunge band in the world but as my mate Ferg puts it,
"Sub Pop has an amazing back catalog and yet all they are playing right now is shit."

Shit is not a polite word, boys and girls.

Anyway, the disappointment and lack of rockness in this blog means this kinda of posts is long overdue. Today, I bring you Gangcharger, a band from Denver that does that whole noise rock thing to almost-perfection. I say almost because I havent seen them live.

Right now in the UK, The Big Pink is leading the "wall of noise" indie thing but Gangcharger is much more visceral than that.
The songs of their EP entitled Metal Sun, at times, reminds me of Pretty The Quick Black Eyes, and then descends into some sort of grunge-noise-destruction before ending on the kind of guitar-epicness that can only be compared to Brand New's The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me album, and that is a fucking good album, in case anyone forgets.

There is still room for Gangcharger's sound to mature. And I cant wait when that happens.
Get in touch with them to buy their Metal Sun ep.

Disco of Doom

disco of doom
It's motherfuckin DISCO OF DOOM, ya'll with the capital letters and all because these guys are fucking awesome have been our current obesssion at the moment! Warpig has been on constant repeat on our players. Okay, trust us when we say these guys are going to be the next big thing, as evident in their new single, In Effect, which is out now.
Their sound is what they call wobble-core, hard electro torn apart by ferocious basslines. It's a big, badass sound for real - they've got their awesome sets at Glasto and Glade to prove that.

We asked Tom Real, one half of Disco of Doom what the guys have been up to lately and he said,
"We're currently working on a new single and lots of remixes have just finished one for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and have a number of other bangers up our sleeves :) "
That sounds nice Tom, but you know what's even nicer? They dropped us their new single and Warpig here for download. If you like it, then you should support and buy the better quality versions on Beatport, you'll know the difference.

My Favorite Robot, Vandermeer

My Favorite Robot
My Favorite Robot are Jared Simms and Voytek Korab and if they aint makin techno together, they're out there working on their own record label of the same name, helping other DJs push their music out.
Now that My Favorite Robot Records has turned 1, they've done this compilation album featuring the 10 best tracks of the past year, which includes remixes from James Teej, and a minimal number by Mateo Murphy working on Vandermeer, which is now our fav chill track at the mo.
If you know your tech house and techno, then you should know that this is a must bag.

Not convinced?
Here are two tracks they've dropped us.
