Crystal Castles is not having much fun at the moment. Their second album and first major label backed self-titled release has been leaked all over the internet a few days back. And their record label’s decision to rush the digital release of the album has been much documented. Of course the intention is to save sales but hasn’t Crystal Castles started out as a myspace phenomenon in the first place, with much of their back catalog shared across the internet, through blogs and mixtapes, eventually contributing to their fame.
If at all, the label should have expected this.
Anyway back to the album: Crystal Castles have put up the entire album for streamed listening on myspace here (14 tracks in all). The first thing that hit me was the maturity of their style. No more of that abrasive gameboy thrash. Instead, we hear emotion, melody and dance.
Baptism and Celestica are big wins already. And another stand out track is Doe Deer – a minute and a half of pure intensity.
Trent Reznor already said he likes it.
