Last night was probably one of the best nights I’ve had in a long while. Souterrain Transmissions arranged for me to interview Zola Jesus before her set at Nation of Shopkeepers in Leeds. You can go and read the interview here. In the meantime, here’s the event in photos. (click to zoom)

Model Warships was on the first slot. An excruciatingly emotional set – in a good way. Model Warships is Michael Waters from Leeds. Vocals really reminding me of Sunny Day Real Estate meets Jeff Buckley, his style  melodramatic like Bright Eyes and typical of those late 90s emo bands – except this is just one dude and his guitar.

And then, we have The Horn The Hunt, a lot of people say they’re like Bat For Lashes, Clare’s vocals are amazing no doubt but the music is more towards The Knife, really.

[Zola Jesus - Sea Talk (Live at Nation of Shopkeepers)]

Zola Jesus’ set was perfect. Nika was totally on form and I wished the sound and the venue could be bigger because her voice deserves better, to be honest. It was so perfect that the set seemed almost rushed, as if someone was playing her record and then skipping next quickly. Her voice, absolutely mystifying – and the whole performance, it kinda put everyone in a trance as she danced, paced the stage, rolled on the floor and climbed on amps and walls.
