Today, I’ve got some futuristic dubstep sounds coming from Bristol’s Kahn who is part of the Sureskank collective. The new EP’s called Altar, just released last month but I was too busy faffing around to put this one up on time. Sorry folks.
The mood in this EP is dark, almost apocalyptic. Listening to tracks like Miss You When I’m Drinking and title track Altar, you cant help feeling a buried guilt resurfacing, like some inner desperate need screaming at your subconscious. Its fucking deep, with the percussion beats tight but not without movement and vocals alternating between dark, soulful and frighteningly mesmeric. Its easy to compare Altar to contemporaries like Burial, except Kahn’s downtempo style has strong references to Eastern influences, electronica and trip-hop beats.

In Sepia he crosses over to garage territory sans the signature synth stabs, the richly textured drum beats taking centre stage, harmonised with haunting vocals and echoes. This is my favorite track. Stop Me Dead‘s opening sequence of industrial sustained synths continues with that dark ambient theme, again, the earnest vocals reaching for your conscience.
Kahn’s label, A Future Without has kindly given away Stop Me Dead as a free download. I seriously recommend it.
