As the week progresses, I feel the need to listen to harsher stuff. So I’m going to take this opportunity to abuse your ears with something from The Afternoon Gentlemen. Originally started 5 years ago with the intention of forming a non-serious grindcore band, this Leeds based gentlemen have gone on to release a string of splits, 7″s and EPs and playing shows with Capitalist Casualties, Napalm Death and Eyehategod.
The Afternoon Gentlemen fuse grind, fastcore and powerviolence, with dual screamy / low vocals but are known to indulge in doomy-sludgy sounds sometimes, like in the Afterdoom EP, where it mostly showcases the slower side of the band. In the Pissed Again 7″ these guys speed things up – short powerful blasts, fast, brutally distorted guitars, nothing over 2 minutes, chaotic screaming about general alcohol-induced fucked-upness. It’s brilliant.
