Canal Mills Launch Party 2012

Whoa. What a night. The Canal Mills launch party was every bit better than expected (and we had high expectations.) Word of caution – just because your party is in a warehouse does not mean it is automatically going to be totes amazeballs. We were promised something completely unlike Leeds, something entirely  different. And boy did it deliver more than we had ever hoped for.

We arrived late, around midnight, a good 3 hours since their doors opened. The venue was just 5mins away by cab from the city centre. The queue was huge but they treated their guestlist entrants mighty fine. From the moment we stepped into the venue, it was awe at first sight. The building was ridiculously massive, it was spacious, cavernous. You cant help but to instinctively look up – the high stone walls were stripped so that their textured skin was bare to see – a photographer’s dream! Industrial pipes running through the ceiling married nicely with wall art and beautiful lighting (as you can see from the photos.) One of us noted that there was a festival vibe to this place – this was true.

Even the seating (which were ample) were painstakingly bespoke designed, every inch of the fucking place was well thought out it was ridiculous. Two huge rooms with big visual screens, and amazing soundsystems that, despite their obvious power, we found that they didn’t bleed into each other’s space. Well sign-posted, the toilets were huge, housed in a large cabin-like space, and towards the left, the huge smoking area provided a welcome respite to smokers and revellers looking for a breath of fresh air.

We were expecting the drinks to be stupidly expensive, like certain mediocre night clubs in town, but they were pretty decent – this was a pleasant surprise. And the crowd, the people – they were a lovely mixed bunch of students, old school ravers, young professionals, beautiful people, and folks just looking for a good time. Unfortunately, even though we knew the music was awesome, we couldn’t pay much attention to Simian Mobile Disco, Julio Bashmore, Tensnake, the 2 Bears and the other DJs  because we were hounded for photos for hours LOL but we didn’t mind, it was great fun and we didn’t want to leave – we eventually did at 5am.

Canal Mills is definitely a venue you must check out, whether you’re in Leeds or not.
