It’s an arts fest, and I usually hate stuff like that because wanky pretensious twats strutting around in immaculate threads, sipping wine and champagne is almost a given. Thank god this one wasn’t anything like that at all. It’s a 3 day fest but we only managed to come over on the second day, which was Saturday afternoon. I had a pounding hangover from clearing the dancefloor from a previous party the night before so wanted something chilled and different. There were so many things going on that day at different parts of the building but it was also sunny out, so we mostly hung outside, chowing down on amazing spicy veg and chicken tikka wraps. Somewhere in the open carpark, I caught the remnants of a once mighty piano, now smashed to pieces from a performance the night before. We headed in to one of the rooms to check out Urban Exploration, a Leeds improv electronic collective. What they do is fucking amazing: its basically live electronica performed with synths, some weird looking home-made instruments, field recordings and other [...]

Savages + Pins @ Fuhrer Bunker, Manchester 1st May 2012

Bands

Featured Artist

Parties

indie

Joy Division

manchester

now wave

pins

pop

savages

siouxie sioux
<guid

At a place called Fuhrer Bunker. In a dead industrial estate with glass shattered and burnt out buildings in the middle of nowhere. Where two supposedly “amazeballs” bands were going to play. In a cage. When you add all of that up together it’ll be stupid not to fucking go. Now this gig was organized by Now Wave Manchester and Sways Records, an indie label based in Salford. I’ve been to a couple of Now Wave nights when I used to live in Manchester a coupla years ago so kinda know what to expect. I was so wrong. So I took the train down, met up with some friends, we drove there and were led to the secret-ish location by Liv from Shatter Japan mag. At the entrance, I was like, “Its just a fucking garage. WTF“. But upon stepping inside, it became apparent that it wasn’t just a garage. It’s a magical, smoky dungeon – dark, dingy, fog machines going mental, there was a bar (when I say bar, I meant a table with a dude handing out cans for a [...]

Feorm

Bands

Featured Artist

Ambient

Experimental

fen tiger

feorm

kosmische

krautrock

post rock

psychadelic
<guid

Improv, improv and fucking improv until something adds up, experiment, refine and the result is always something cool. Feorm is an instrumental collective based in Norfolk and that is exactly what they do. Find an old barn, get some amps and instruments down and create, create, create! Initially brought together for their love of krautrock / kosmische stuff like Can and NEU! they’ve progressively expanded into more ambitious territories – post-rock, psychadelic vibes, and the more experimental regions, you can tell these guys have a good ear for sound and a brilliant record collection. Sex Hands is in actual fact 3/4 Welsh and only 1/4 Mancunian. Daily Life on the other hand, decided to go on a temporary hiatus by the time this release came out because one of em decided to move to New Zealand. Sex Hands comprise of members from Klaus Kinski, Irma Vep, and Waiters and they sound like a mob up to no good, essentially, loud fuzzed-up garage rock, shouty vocals, everything in lo-fi, almost veering into absolute shambolic disorder. It’s like going a karaoke bar with a buncha drunk guys, everyone shouting into the mic together “ICHIBAN FOR MEN! ICHIBAN FOR MEN!”. And that’s their aim I think, to be as chaotic and fun as possible without sounding like shit or taking themselves too seriously. Contrast that with the more reverb-ed / jangly, summer-friendly pop sounds of Daily Life and you’ve got an ace 12min player in your hands. Fans of bands like Male Bonding, Crocodiles and others of that ilk will like this. Also The Horn The Hunt, which I have organized a show for previously and covered extensively on here, are supporting. One of my friends, Alice, has just joined the band as a guitarist. Could I have gotten a guestlist? Maybe. But this gig is at the Brude. And I like supporting local venues and actually paying for my ticket so that the bands get a fair deal too. I bought my ticket, thought, hey why not bring my camera too as I usually do when I go to local gigs and headed down. Yes, I was expecting a mass of over-eager, young L Word female fans, yes I was expecting it to be slightly more mental than usual, but I wasn’t expecting this: 2 bouncers stopped me at the door. 1 of them was friendly and lovely. We’ve come to an age where being an “electronic” solo musician almost always seem to result in a “performance” with only a laptop on stage. Which is fine, I suppose. But there is nothing special about that. It’s not exactly a great live experience to watch somebody staring behind a laptop screen, is it? There is something honest and genuine about analog and it’s quite hard to remain analog especially if your persuasion is electronic. Why lug multiple big ass synths, fumble with microphones and co-ordinate with cables, stands, mixers and managing the execution of it all when they can all be compacted and easily served from a laptop? This here is Jack, also known as Soft Riot based in London. His music is heavily synth based, dark, with a certain 80s leaning. And I’m talking about the coldwave / darkwave movements with a touch of new wave. It brings to mind my love for bands like Norma Loy, Bunker Strasse, maybe even the slightly more palatable Asylum Party: With 2 actual synths plugged into a myriad of effects and accompanied by equally athmospheric lighting, Soft Riot stays true to analog, successfully maintaining [...]

Os Ovni – Holographic Dreams

Bands

Electronic

experiemental

Os Ovni

pop

psychadelic

robot elephant records
<guid

There are 3 artists that I really wanna talk about today, and they are Peter Broderick, A Classic Education and Frank Rabeyrolles. They’re all different, and have different styles but the thing that they share together is a love of beautifully executed reverb, and the quiet side of things. This one was kinda a random, impulsive decision to get out of the same boring weekday routine of work, home, sleep, dinner, repeat. It’s a chance to break the cycle, enjoy some new bands, make some new friends. And of course, I was primarily there to see Galaxians again. And I love the venue, Wharf Chambers. The folks behind the bar were cooking dinner for the touring bands, people were playing foozeball and enjoying a chilled beer. Then, an unexpected visit from my hairdresser’s colleague who worked in a pretty posh salon round the corner, he came up to say hi. In the other room, the other bands were setting up and soundchecking. A really relaxed, friendly vibe. First up was Hagman, a 2 man performance duo armed with a hell of alot of effects pedals, some home-made equipment rigged up to strange machines and cb radios. My ears were treated to a good serving of noise tweaked, manipulated, distorted and bleeding out of the speakers for 25 minutes. It was a refreshing experience and I quite liked it: [Hagman - For Next To Nothing] From the town of Bletchley, [...]

Sex Pistols “Anarchy In The UK” Record Store Day Limited Reissue

Bands

jamie reid

Punk

sex pistols
<guid

The album I’m referring to Fog Electric by North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO for short), a mammoth 10 track meaty offering due for release via the Kscope imprint (home to my favorite band The Pineapple Thief). What North Atlatic Oscillation is putting out basically, is a collection of found sound and electronica mathematically arranged into a beautiful patchwork of songs almost resembling music – because, well, it’s not music. It’s fucking art. This is most definitely not an easy listening album. Fog Electric, with its subtle technical offtimed pace changes, unexpected guitar riffs surging to epic wall of sound levels, background textures punctuated with a myriad of electronic manipulated loops, bleeps, repeats and dreamy/eerie synths – its a revelation. It’s like as if AIR, múm, Mew, Boards of Canada, Death Cab and Mogwai have decided to form a ridiculous superband and this is the finished product. Quite an excessive statement to make, but seriously, have you heard the album yet? Post rock? No. Prog rock, it’s not quite. I think NAO has more than surpassed “prog”. Check this beautiful video: [2:54 - You're Early VIDEO] [2:54 - You're Early] 2:54 are sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow, joined by Alex and Joel on bass and drums. It’s the haunting dual guitars and the seductive vocals that get to me, it’s sexy, dangerous and dark at the same time. Vivid, brooding and moody as hell, listening to them conjures up bits and pieces of images from random films – late night lonely drives, out to the edge of town, cut to a crappy motel room, then cut to somebody that looks like a version of Fiona Apple staring at you in a dingy nightclub, a cigarette dangling from her mouth, a frantic party in full swing – everything seen through slowmotion lens. Well, it went like this: I was at the Kylesa + Circle Takes The Square show at Josephs Well a coupla weeks back. And I saw this kid at the bar with an orange Diet Pills patch. I’ve seen that patch before and I swear to god I’ve heard some friends mention this band a coupla times. Diet Pills, is a four piece from Leicester. They’ve been going on for about 4 years now, and their sound is what they refer to as rock – which is, if we were to be a bit more descriptive, sounds like Ed Gein and Kylesa put together – just sludgier, with a higher pitch, Locust-style vocals. I hope you like a little bit of garage rock: Speak & The Spells are a 3 piece doing this retro rockabilly-style revival thing complete with fuzzed out guitars, pounding rolling bass and rock and roll vocals howlin’ and screamin into the night. Anyway first things first my most recent buys! As a massive fan of the “2nd Drop” out put when I found out about the new Tessela release I had to get it, the dark percussion sends me back to the days of listening to Jack Sparrow or Ruckspin, but the drum riddim is all about a new UK Funky/2step rhythm, slightly of kilter but the bass just punchs in all the right ways. This latest track sees them continuing their foray into dark electronica territory, armed with a video of intensely choreographed dance moves, Helen Hamilton almost like Natalie Portman in Black Swan, her vocals stronger than ever. Do As You Please is only the 2nd song that is publicly released by Death Rattle thus far. It’s a relatively new project but Death Rattle has been around for years, in other guises such as That Mouth and Los. And the more I hear them, the more certain I am of the Fever Ray, maybe even The Knife vibes coming off these tracks. Do As You Please will be released on 7th of May. You must check out their 1st track The Dig in a previous post here. This is one of their house-party vibes kinda gig at RnR. Never a bad night. In fact, I got educated on Galaxians. How could I have missed out on this band for this long, I have no idea. Galaxians is Jed and Matt (of Azores, ex Cissy) and they fuse all the best bits of disco, krautrock, and 80s italo together into a gigantic wave of live awesomeness. We’re talking about pure dance music here, done with a DIY attitude with solid, live drums. It’s got all the kids dancin like its 1989. You know its a party when the entire room’s groovin and sweatin. Galaxians have some rough recordings down. I cant wait for them to mix and master some of them because these tracks are fit as: [Galaxians - UHF 625] [Galaxians - Mermaids of Miami] Pifco were the first band to open, fun DIY guitar pop. And then, I had words with this drunk during Halo Halo‘s set. I don’t usually give a fuck but this one was seriously distruptive in a way that was not cool. That’s where my true love for music lies – in sweaty basement shows, packed to the rafters, supporting your mate’s band at a random show in an industrial unit somewhere, getting drunk, falling in love, slamdancing, fists punching the air, ripping that riff right off the fucking guitar, screaming like I meant it. And I mean it. Band I really love, to this day, are bands like Saetia. Orchid. La Quiete. Raein. Amanda Woodward. Circle Takes The Square. Chaotic, screamo bands. Explosions, a method of expression through genuine, sometimes political, sometimes heartfelt lyrics. Bands that don’t give a shit about how they look. Bands that gave a fuck about their music, the music as a medium of communication. [City of Caterpillar - A Little Change Could Go A Long Ways] For me, I think screamo, and without trying to sound elitist/childish, I mean real screamo, slowly died out after the demise of Level Plane Records. Those few that continued with this genre slipped further underground. And then the genre itself became confused with a lot of shit like The Used and others of that ilk. The Norwegian producer Andreas Rasmussen who goes by the moniker Pandreas, dropped me a quick short email earlier this week, about his love for photography and music, leaving his soundcloud link for me to get into. If I’m honest, I wasn’t expecting much. “Noise pop” – sure, everyone does noise pop these days. It’s almost a by-word for pop music done badly. Yet, what greeted me instead was something so magnificent, I had to blog this up now before the folks at Pitchfork get hold of it. Imagine D/R/U/G/S on drugs, or Gold Panda completely blissed out – no, this isnt that chillwave crap, rather, noise-pop that isn’t using the word “noise” to hide its inferiority. Pandreas makes use of samples and loops from here and there, bits and pieces of found sound and weaves and recycles them into gloriously accessible pop. It’s pop music for dancers, believers. It’s joyous, beautiful pop music. Simple and emotional at the same time. I can’t believe these are his only productions. With their strong attachment to Krautrock and Italo, this Brooklyn duo compose tracks that can be both cosmic and cold at the same time. Rolling insistent beats clash with severe, numbing synths. I love it. Coma is the perfect example to showcase: Reminds me so much of my other favorite band, The Soft Moon: Line is another winner. The German underground influence strong and valid: Take also, this track, Romance. It begins like a hopeful disco adventure, but the moment the weeping mellow synths come in, all that initial hope is lost, the tinge of sadless takes centre stage. What started as bright and confident optimism becomes the soundtrack to running away and loneliness. If you’re feeling adventurous, listen to their remix of Elite Gymnastix. And if you have been inside the Temple Works, you will know why the building was perfect for this. Far from the hospital-clean, minimal and zen art spaces we’re used to with their unblemished white walls, neatly and compulsively labelled art pieces, and watched over by obnoxious and over-ly pretensious art zealots, the huge Temple Works will fully utilise its original characteristic floors – there is one that resembles a German military interrogation bunker setting with its solemn lighting and cubicle spaces, there is another floor with its bright natural lighting from ceilings and high, textured walls make like an abandoned pre-war ballet studio. Then there are the vintage toilets – some that could have been used for the setting of that freakish horror film Saw (the very first one) and the others cleaned-out and re-used into artist spaces. There are also the neat hidden stairwells and walls peeling from old paint, exposing stone and concrete, the history of the building peeking through, almost merging with the art. This information is regarding Wrongpop: Volume 1, a compilation of songs from up and coming bands in aid of Deafness Research UK. Some really awesome bands in here; Shield Your Eyes (check out photos from their set in Leeds), That Fucking Tank, Pulled Apart By Horses, Kong, and my new favorite discovery of the month, Ice, Sea, Dead People. Ice, Sea, Dead People are a bunch of London kids doing skewed up noisy garage punk, plenty of off-timed riffs, abrupt stops and bratty shouty vocals. Kinda like if you try hard to imagine The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower with the swag of Ikara Colt. It’s not quite punk attitude but it’s energized as fuck. I smile like a stupid groupie every time I remember the moment I saw Katy outside The Library in Leeds a few years back, and the time when I very shy-ly came up to say hi to Cassie in her denim jacket, as she was lighting a fag outside the show at the Brude…. anyway - Cassie Ramone’s other band The Babies have a new single coming out in April via Bad Paintings Records, a DIY label based in York (that’s just a few train stops away from Leeds!). That’s perfect timing considering April is when Spring is in full bloom, and with warmer weather comes the yearning for warmer sounds. First recorded in 2009, My Name and The War were one of the first songs written and recorded by the band. Bad Paintings suggests Shangri-Las and the English psychadelic rock group, The Creation, as possible influences. This is honest garage pop with undeniable, retro-surf sentiment borrowed from 60s garage rock songwriting. Where previously they were almost always unavoidably compared to Foals, now the evolution is almost complete with a sound they can uniquely claim as their own. Take the example below from the Counter Balance ep: One of the video’s commentators pointed out that “Foals could have done it.” Maybe, maybe not. To me, Foals have always been a technical guitar band with electronic music elements. Breton, on the other hand is an electronic band with guitar elements. It’s a distinct difference. The use of dubsteppy beats meets Good Shoes style indie dance. You can see why Hemlock Recordings was perfect for Breton. But Good Shoes is so 2007. And dubstep, as a genre has moved on. When we heard this video 2 years ago, it was mint. Now, it sounds kinda unimpressive. The video sees the Icelandic songstress team up with Drew Berry, one of the world’s foremost animator specializing in biomedical visualization, to represent a partly scientific view of the song. The level of detail in the graphics of the video was achieved by taking exploring inside Bjork’s body at a microscopic level, and the animation was then created from molecular models of DNA through scientifically sourced data obtained from methods such as x-ray crystallography. Acomplicated process and one that is fascinating at the same time – the result is a beautiful video, painfully intricate, fitting for a song as eerie as Hollow. It forms part of the theme of Biophilia, – through which Bjork reaches out to her audience and explains how nature, music and technology can come together into one amazing, beautiful union. Their self titled cassette was released late last year via Bart Records. That is their only full length so far and it’s tight as fuck. Chaotic screamo, shrill screamy vocals just like I like it, lyrics earnest and personal. Why this really wins for me is the fact that the lead singer is a woman – not that it’s so important to look at the gender of lead singers but that screamo or hardcore for that matter, is such a male dominated scene, that, when every once in a while you hear a great band with an awesome vocalist who happens to be female, it’s just so refreshing, and powerful and inspiring. Corey, the vocalist for Mahria, has a thing or two to say about this. Also, they remind me of this: [La Quite - La Fine Non è La Fine] I loved all the songs and it’s hard to pick some favorites but here are some tracks from the release that grabbed me the most: [Mahria - Lights] [Mahria - Justification of an Old Man] [Mahria - Wagering Life] The entire [...]

Constantina

Bands

Ambient

constantina

Experimental

instrumental

jazz

Mum

post rock
<guid

I was introduced to Constantina as an instrumental 7-piece post-rock band hailing from Brazil and let me tell you what they really me of – nevermind Mono, think múm, that icelandic band of quiet whispers and twitchy hazy electronica. Does that make them any less post rock? I’m not sure, maybe not in the context of Haveno, the fourth album to be released digitally via the Dry Cry imprint. Whilst I was expecting a sombre set of songs that begin moodily in all their technical emotive glory and escalate into a crashing crescendo, what happened instead was that I was greeted with uplifting, easy listening numbers punctuated throughout with really twee electronica niceness and jazz-lounge percussions and the sounds of the Brazilian fiesta in the background. This does not mean that my experience was a bad thing, it’s just quite unexpected. And sometimes unexpectedness, especially in this case, is good.
