I have been waking up every morning at precisely 7:43am “We live in an age of many stimulations. If you are focused you are harder to reach. If you are distracted, you are available.” I am distracted. I am available. The constant struggle to justify, validify, emphasize. Nevermind the external distractions – emotion is the stimulation. Passion – heady and strong and meaningless and unreasonable and sucks the life out of you, the drug of fools, substituting productivity for complete, utter failure. And then the quiet seething rage setting in. Emotion. Its a good thing. The beat of a disheartened heart, shallow breathing, shadow dancing with every fear and all that could have been, scratching at the surface of everything, trying to arrive at some meta meaning, the meaning of meaning. Yeah, some kinda bleak existential crisis, maybe even some kinda privileged, hipster despair. And yet. And yet there is pleasure in pain. Let me break it down for you: I couldn’t go to work on Friday. Someone in the office gave me a nasty bastard chest and sinus infection. By the time Saturday rolled in, I was still so ropey I nearly cancelled my attendance for the festival. Regardless, turn up I did, and with my sidekick Sophie and her friend Simon, we negotiated the thick crowd queuing outside Leeds City Museum, got our wristbands and proceeded to plan who to see. I have never seen such a huge turnout. Simon and Sophie had just got back from Liverpool Soundcity and from the feedback gathered, the “largest metropolitan music and arts festival in the UK” did not seem so large or so busy at all. That wasn’t sarcasm, that was just what was said. In contrast, the massive crowd turning out for Live At Leeds was so huge it almost got to the point of annoying (for me anyway. I was fucking ill.) There were queues outside every participating venues, 3 to 4 bodies deep waiting to be served at the bars, etc. This [...]

Live At Leeds 2013: What To Expect

Bands

Events

Bearfoot Beware

black moth

indie

leeds

lve at leeds

menace beach

must

post punk

savages

wet nuns

witch hunt
<guid

And I’ll tell you why. 1) Savages. are. playing. Enough said. 2) Awesome venues across Leeds, favorites are the now newly refurbished Nation of Shopkeepers. Brudenell is always alot of fun and then there’s Trinity Church, next to the newly opened shopping area Trinity Leeds. 3) Over a 100 bands including Savages (to re-iterate point no. 1) also Menace Beach whom I’ve always been meaning to catch: [Menace Beach - Drop Outs] 4) MUST, the band with probably the most unsearchable band name on Google ever but with great shoegaze-y summery sounds to die for: [Must - Die For You] 5) Witch Hunt, whom we’ve been following for awhile via Death Rattle: [Witch Hunt - Crawl] (can I just say I’m quite gutted these guys are not playing at Trinity Church? The setting would have been perfect!) 6) Tickets are only £22.50! For 100 bands + more that works out to less than 30p per band??!! Amaze! Get them (the tickets, not the bands) here. 7) An ace skill and idea sharing workshop/conference for musicians and enthusiasts called The Unconference, back for its 4th installment [...]

SAVAGES – Shut Up (New Video)

Bands

indie

post punk

savages
<guid

This urban landscape, man-made, concrete and steel crevices in between buildings and walls pulsating with the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of modern living. I’m thinking specifically Berlin. Specifically. Why Berlin? I have never been there though it is a dream. In many ways, I can draw parallels with my love for Leeds with Berlin. At face-value, Leeds may not be the tech/art/economic force that Berlin is. But if you look closely at how communities of creatives, artists and individuals turn the industrial drab of this city into a canvas of light, music and art, the way we re-utilise warehouses and turn them into clubs, community spaces and film festival venues, how independent pop-up shops spring forth from empty retail shops and so on – much of this energy, this attitude can be found within the collectives in Berlin. But back to techno, the reassuringly efficient techno beat – it is the sound of modern living. Great techno transports you past the now, the physical into the hyperphysical. So it is with utmost excitement that [...]

Brilliant Colors, Wharf Chambers, 8th April 2013, Leeds

Bands

Parties

best coast

brilliant colors

coasting

indie

indie surf

leeds

pop

pulled apart by horses

Sky Larkin

slumberland records

surf pop

veronica falls

wharf chambers
<guid

Menace Beach (featuring members from other awesome Leeds bands Sky Larkin and Pulled Apart By Horses) and the Proper Ornaments), people were more interested with the news about someone’s death than check out and support a really great band that came all the way from San Francisco to play here but Brilliant Colors took it in their stride even though at times it seemed that nobody really knew what was going on, who this band was etc etc. Of course one cannot underestimate the gravity of the situation/history/politics but this post is not about politics so lets leave it at that. What better person to review this than the amazing Joy G, aka Morbid (also going by the moniker Cbloxx.) As the art director for Leeds’ independent film festival No/Gloss, an established commissioned graffiti artist herself and a long time fellow Bad Fotography collaborator, she gives us the lowdown of what went on in that amazing artspace, in her point of view: —– On hearing that fellow Yorkshire man Phlegm would be returning to the land of Steel and Wool for his latest installation, I immediately presumed that it would take place in his home town of Sheffield. However, it seems a long overdue looming dawn of visual arts has begun to rear its head from the cosmopolitan swamp that is Leeds. This is in part mainly to the persistent efforts of many talented, hard working, local creative’s and independent businesses fighting to stay afloat in this city. Which is why it is so refreshing to see Canal Mills’, a multi arts venue, doing so well in its first year of flight. In Leeds. With Joy Orbison. Fuck. Yeah I know she’s played in Leeds many times but I have never got the opportunity to go see her. Finally, the time has come. For those of you who are not aware, I have been covering Maya’s rise to fame since her days in She Is Danger with Lena Cullen and her dubstep side project Nocturnal Sunshine. Can’t believe so much has changed so quickly. Also, appearing on the covers of Mixmag and DJMag, in a scene so dominated by males are, in my opinion, monumental events in the industry, especially for someone so young. Her 2011 EP, Focus Now on 20:20 Vision is still one of my top favorite house releases. The countless stream of useless, non-personalised emails from PR agencies who should know better than to send me badly written presspacks about artists that are totally not relevant to this blog, had me so underwhelmed and uninspired that I have turned my attention to another project. There is only so much you can take when everyday you open your inbox and its all just disappointment after disappointment eating up the storage limit. Quoting Andy Inglis, “There’s already too much bad music“. We don’t need more of them. Saying that, there are bands and producers who do push the boundaries of mainstream expectations and their own comfort zones. These are the sort of gems you can only “stumble on”, the type of secret awesomeness that your mates gush at you at after gigs. Isaac Tichauer‘s I Forgive You released at the end of last year on the French Express imprint is the perfect soundtrack to accompany you while shake off the post festivities come down. Deep moog-ed out bassline and chopped up melodic vocals start your journey, the sparkling cymbals and toms bring in the color. You then get led to the party when the piano synth-stabs make their appearance, everything comes beautifully together. I’m a sucker for piano-led house. And at a relatively mid tempo groove, I can imagine playing this track in my car, cruising down the Last Vegas strip, past the busy bars with their drink promotions and bingo halls and casinos like www.partycasino.com, taking in the sounds, the bright neon lights, the night. [Isaac Tichauer - I Forgive You] I love this kinda house music, this one’s got a tinge of that tropical blissed out vibes, vocals, with an euphoric edge – nothing too hard, chilled and catchy. Waited in the rain for half an hour for the cab to arrive and when I finally got there, thinking I was late, I was quite disappointed to see that the venue wasn’t packed out. The excuse that it’s a Sunday night just doesn’t cut it. This is THE SOFT MOON we are talking about here – probably the best band of our time that captures that entire post-punk era of the 80s to perfection. The fact that most people still haven’t heard of em is a fucking crime. That is not to say, they are mere revivalists with no sense of originality. Every band has their own influences – these guys push it a few bars higher with a new updated sense of urgency, while still staying true to the definitive post-punk “sound”. The gig opened with Dracula Lewis – the name “Dracula” derived from the fact that he was born in Transylvania. Mid-week gigs is always a weird one, you just don’t know what the turn out is going to be like on a school night. And that night felt slightly “off” too – there was a kind of tension in the air, and even as I walked to Friends of Ham for some pre-show drinks, I felt the tightness in the air choke me. A few drinks and a platter of divine cured meat and cheese later, I was sorted and ready to rumble. We rolled into Oporto quite the hip joint on Call Lane, and were just in time to catch White Heat. Now, the description about this band on the FB event page was: “Sweet music played loud and unavoidable. A very exciting new prospect from a few familiar faces, with slick transitions and refined riffs, they devour their prey.” I’m sorry but it was no such thing. As I sit here going through Savages‘ facebook photo album, making plans for the show with O Children and The Voyeurist tomorrow and listening to Vuvuvultures, I cannot help but feel a sense of, relief. Relief in the sense that these upcoming bands have restored my faith in British guitar music, and most importantly, in the music of our generation. Relief but also wonder. I’m thinking, why is it always the bands and artists that explore the darker realms of life and living… – why do we find that desirable? And fulfilling? Is it like some kind of preservation of sanity, the way we look towards these people, making these melancholic sounds, as if to find a way to “even out” the false security created by mindlessly happy chart nonsense fed to us day in, day out in mainstream media. A kind of balance? Or is it like a personal private desire to self-destruct, live on the edge, fill the need for the outre, total fucking decadence - but through music? Its the perfect sound to accompany a lonely, foggy autumn night in. Don’t let the new wave-y upbeat tempo of Fixer fool you into a dance party, this is dark, melancholic electronic music for the heartbroken and misunderstood. Also, tracks like Mouse Chorus has got that lovely Fever Ray touch, its a nice feeling I don’t want to shake off. [Death Rattle - Fixer] But it’s Sorry For Your Loss that really wins it for me and it’s the last song on the EP. Gloomy synths bleeding over a marching beat. It’s bleak and beautiful, and sad like that last song they play at closing time in a club when everyone’s paired off for the night and you find yourself alone, walking home in the cold at 3am in the morning. [Death Rattle - Fixer] [Death Rattle - Do As You Please] I think for me, He&I has achieved a very “European” sorta sound, something that can be attributed to the band’s influences but also perhaps, that it was recorded in a large disused farmhouse in the middle of nowhere in France and [...]

Linea Aspera

Bands

coldwave

dark wave

Experimental

gothic

Linea Aspera

post punk
<guid

If you’re wondering why Riya sounds familiar, it’s because she’s done so many vocals for various explosive dnb tunes like this one, a personal favourite of mine by Lenzman out on Metalheadz: [Lenzman - Open Page (Feat. Riya)] And this one with Instra:mental and dBridge: [Instra:Mental, dBridge & Riya - Seems Like] The reason I’m bangin on about her vocals on this release is because it’s the vocals that really set the depth and the mood to these tracks. And it’s not that these tracks aren’t great on their own, they are, but Riya’s vocals totally lifts them to a new level. Sabre’s Injustice flows like a river deep with melancholia, the bass and the lonely piano keys marry nicely with Riya’s emotional lyrics. And then on the other side, Foreign Concept’s Affliction - the tenacious sound turned on its head into a sultry, late night soundtrack, a stunning twist. The Canal Mills launch party was every bit better than expected (and we had high expectations.) Word of caution – just because your party is in a warehouse does not mean it is automatically going to be totes amazeballs. We were promised something completely unlike Leeds, something entirely different. And boy did it deliver more than we had ever hoped for. [LAUER - "Trainman" (Tensnake Tranceman Remix) SNIPPET] We arrived late, around midnight, a good 3 hours since their doors opened. The venue was just 5mins away by cab from the city centre. The queue was huge but they treated their guestlist entrants mighty fine. From the moment we stepped into the venue, it was awe at first sight. The building was ridiculously massive, it was spacious, cavernous. You cant help but to instinctively look up – the high stone walls were stripped so that their textured skin was bare to see – a photographer’s dream! They were energetic, with an intense lead singer scream-shouting her lungs out and crashing into the crowd, totally reminding me very much of the two Jenns from Mika Miko. The drums were completely all over the place (in a good way) and the bass/guitars were totally weird-ed out, wire-y and crunked out with crazed wonky effects. Saturday night saw me and my cab pull up on a dark, poorly lit side road somewhere on the edge of the city centre. If you’ve been a follower for awhile, you’ll know that we’ve moved from simply writing about stuff we like to focusing on emerging, underground and DIY music. That’s because we felt that the latter deserves to be discovered more than, say, an artist who is already on a pretty decent label. I’ve also decided that the myriad of awesome bands who play shows in Leeds only to return back to the obscurity from which they came from really need to be heard and appreciated. Leeds has a brilliant scene and there is so much going on, shows nearly every day, parties nearly every weekend, new sights and sounds to experience nearly every second. Thus the blog became a blog about underground and emerging music of all genres, from everywhere, but also with a focus on the scene in Leeds, UK. It took us nearly 3 years, but this blog has finally found its niche and its audience. Yes, it means our posts now feature bands [...]

Super Luxury Tape Release + Party

Bands

Events

Bearfoot Beware

Double Muscle

hardcore

Juffage

leeds

Magnapinna

noise

rock

super luxury

two trick horse

Vasco De Gama

Yugoslavian Boys
<guid

Well, not new to me anyway because I’ve known these great guys for awhile now BUT they will be an awesome find for YOU! Azores rose from the ashes of a great Leeds band, Cissy. Drummer Matt Woodward, guitarist Matthew and bassist Gavin decided they wanted to continue to make music that explored foreign beats, jazzy timings, party-psyche vibe. Thus Azores was born, gifting the world with their brand of calculated improv-soundscape, located somewhere between the isles of afrobeat and the depths of post-punk, re-imagined by their love for the No Wave movement of the 80s. The best thing about going to gigs at Wharf Chambers is that you will always find see someone you know there, or if you don’t, make friends with someone new. There is nothing else like it. Tonight’s gig was special. Special because one of the bands that I really wanted to catch have members from other bands that I really love and support and have put on shows for, and secondly, I was really excited to see Aggi Doom. Lets get straight into it: I was feeling shit, like I was coming down with something, forced myself to go to the gym, realized that this gig was on tonight, dragged myself home, got changed, thought it was a good excuse for the studded leather jacket tonight and ran straight down to Wharf Chambers. Met the organizer Daria at the door, who is also in Etai Keshiki (another great screamy band you guys should check out) and was pleasantly surprised to see a zine distro there as well as a table full of tapes, vinyls, merch and stuff. By THAT, I mean, Beacons Festival 2012, which, as it turned out, was to be the first ever music festival I’ve ever been to, ever. So what was it like? I know the organizers prefer previews rather than reviews, nothing wrong with that, it helps to generate interest in order to sell tickets but I feel reviews give a better picture of the event so that it helps to form people’s opinions / expectations for the next one. So here’s mine. Speaking of opinions and expectations, there’s been a few about this fest. Some are very good, some are very bad, some dont really have an opinion. What do I think? I think, the thing that most people tend to forget is that it is not easy to organize a festival. It takes alot of guts, commitment, money and patience. I know. Because I’m currently helping to organize one, albeit it being a smaller scale film festival. So maybe that Rihanna t-shirt that was on sale at the fest by this collective was highly inappropriate, the beer was overpriced and yeah the toilets were fucking disgusting and isn’t exactly a hypochondriac’s dream but what [...]

In Photos: Shhh_ift 11th Aug 2012 @ Full Circle Leeds

DJs

Parties

leeds

shhh_ift

techno
<guid

This is my third outing to this clubnight and every time it just keeps getting better and better. The Shhh_ift collective like to keep things underground but accessible: their venues are never revealed until the very last minute so you literally have to keep your ears peeled or keep checking their facebook for updates. Every once in a while, they give away a hint or a clue about where or what the next venue is going to be. One of their absolute legendary nights was when they transformed the Leeds cage fighting venue into a dark techno experience. [Shhh_ift Mix #5 - Ryan Johnson] Clubbing in Leeds is a strange, frustrating affair – if you don’t know the right crowd, you end up thinking “Leeds is shit” because all you do is follow the mainstream clubs. There’s nothing wrong with that but if you think about the other main nights in Leeds with their ridiculously expensive bars and entry prices setting you back fifteen or twenty quid before you can even have fun, it’s frustrating. I knew from the start that it was going to be an amazing night, at a great venue, for people with good taste in music. In their own words, the playlist was all about the “elements of classic New York boogie, early 1980s electro and synth-funk in songs such as ‘Fire And Magic’ and ‘Electroads’ “. Too old school, you say? I think it’s refreshing. When every other club in town plays boring unimaginative dubstep or typical indie-schmindy shtick, Release Yourself lets looks pure unadultered nostalgia, Studio 54 vibes, great tunes, the perfect summer party. There were 70s dance videos videos projected onto the wall while the DJs and band tore up the crowd. It was truly brilliant. [This here is Mr Magic Keys.] Of course everyone’s favorite live disco band from Leeds had to open the night. And that was like ages ago so this one was a nice surprise. Everything Is Made In China (EIMIC) are 3 lads from Russia and they make offbeat quirky guitar pop songs with a proggy aesthetic. Think Blonde Redhead meets The Pineapple Thief, a bit of Foals – maybe. They actually sound very good and despite the fact that they’ve recorded and produced with Dean Marino (Tokyo Police Club, Born Ruffians) and John McEntire (Broken Social Scene, PVT, Tortoise), I’ve never actually heard of them. Their most recent single in particular, called Parades, is absolutely stellar. You can sorta feel the post-rock leanings on this one. Beautifully arranged sections, dropping off fluidly into tempo-changes, gentle off timing and then coming together really well, it’s so effortless. In Decay is a compilation of unheard tracks and demos you probably havent encountered yet from this synthwave producer. Came over to see Etai Keshiki play at Wharf Chambers for the Beauty Pageant / Trans/Human / Moral Holiday gig. Anyway this post is dedicated to Etai because I’ve always meant to do a proper post but never got round to one. Etai Keshiki describe themselves as “used to be ropey, now a legit riff unit” – but I honestly think they’re ace. The drummer, Rob, is also in Endless Rope, a great band whom I’ve featured on here before. The first time I got to know them was when Daria handed me a tape at a show, I think it was last year. They certainly weren’t ropey then and they aren’t now either. Plus, I just love how Daria works her guitars and the effects she uses. The band has since moved on from screamy furious sets to noisier, more experimental territories. When I saw them last night they’ve started to introduce a strange, little device that emitted wasp-y crazy sounds in their set. I love it. Bought a patch from them too. But enough about me – The Horn The Hunt, yes one of my favorite Leeds’ based pop band, they’ve got their new single Gold out today. Remember that time when I saw them at Brudenell Social Club as a four piece live supporting Uh Huh Her and I said they’ve never sounded so complete? That completeness is magnified and crisp in this single. Really big vocals, the sound of the desert, the loneliness and all that space, captured on vinyl. Why not. Sounds like fun. Let’s get some ace hardcore and punk bands and have a good time. There’s football and 3 other gig clashes going on, but lets just try and make it work. So, seeing that my alliances always lie with Glasgow for some reason, I got Crusades down to headline, together with other bands like Feral Youth from Nottingham, Leeds bands The Afternoon Gentlemen, Endless Rope, Bears Killing Bears and Temple Ghosts. All bands play absolutely different styles, and are almost polar opposites, but I wanted to showcase the diversity of “hardcore” and “punk” in the present day. I also decided it was the right time to make use of my shiny video camera and decided to make a video out of the whole thing. Here it is: Temple Ghosts opened the night, a very short, sharp quick set, heavy and light, loud and fast, combining different elements, texture and space between screaming and heavy riffs to athmospheric quiet moments and build ups. So I’m going to take this opportunity to abuse your ears with something from The Afternoon Gentlemen. Originally started 5 years ago with the intention of forming a non-serious grindcore band, this Leeds based gentlemen have gone on to release a string of splits, 7″s and EPs and playing shows with Capitalist Casualties, Napalm Death and Eyehategod. The Afternoon Gentlemen fuse grind, fastcore and powerviolence, with dual screamy / low vocals but are known to indulge in doomy-sludgy sounds sometimes, like in the Afterdoom EP, where it mostly showcases the slower side of the band. In the Pissed Again 7″ these guys speed things up – short powerful blasts, fast, brutally distorted guitars, nothing over 2 minutes, chaotic screaming about general alcohol-induced fucked-upness. Check out the carnage recorded on video at a house party show about a week back: > They’ve just released their 2 track ep, Evil Dead 4 weeks ago. I wasn’t aware they’ve split up 2 years ago until I contacted Jon asking if they’d like to play. Comprising of members from Twisted, Facel Vega, my other fav local screamo band Etai Keshiki (whom I’ve neglected to feature on this blog for some reason), and Waste of Rations, Endless Rope play furious, emotive hardcore punk with earnest Rites of Spring style shouty vocals. It’s got a dark, seriously late 90s, early 2000 sound that makes me feel all nostalgic inside – this is a good thing. This is my fav track from their demo recording: [Endless Rope - Antiquated] Another important distinction is also the obvious post-punk influence, like in this track [...]

The Saddest Landscape Needs Your Help

Bands

emo

pianos become the teeth

post-hardcore

screamo

the saddest landscape

topshelf records
<guid

They’re putting up their early discography up on bandcamp, the proceeds of which will go to a close friend in need. All Is Apologized. All is Forgiven is a huge 23-track collection and the whole’s thing’s on sale for a mere dollar. The money will go towards their close friend and supporter of the band, Barrie, whose mother has fallen unexpectedly ill and whose family is going through a difficult time trying to cover medical bills. The band hopes to raise $1000 over the next few weeks so please, support an awesome band for a good cause and get 23 great songs in return. Shock, hype and controversy formed the vehicle that was used to promote the Punk movement, and it’s not the kind of shock, hype and controversy the way a political spin machine spews its propaganda. The media lapped it up, the public loved and hated it at the same time. The experience was all so new, so disgusting, so impossible, in Conservative stiff-upper-lipped Britain. There wasn’t a singular posterboy for the movement (though this can be argued) but there were posters. Fuck loads of it. How did an entire subculture, era, become identified by this art? The art and the music and the subculture could almost be used interchangeably – such was the boldness and striking identity all 3 shared. Sure it started out as fashion, but there is no denying that it moved from frivolous fashion statement into something much more powerful, inspiring the legions of bands and artists spawned who [...]
